I’ve been sprinkled with some twitter party lucky dust this past year. Rafflecopter makes entering so simple and I am happy to follow a variety of businesses on facebook. A little while back, I won a prize pack from Sweet Pea Organics, with an adorable t-shirt, kid and toddler protein bars, and a reusable bag. I was excited to try this prize pack because I’ve been trying to do a better job of steering my kids from pre-packaged, artificial ingredient-laden foods toward more fresh fruits and whole grains
Sweet Pea Organics protein bars and teething biscuits are thoughtfully prepared by mom and chef, Grace. She believes that “a life well lived is is one that is simple, balanced, and pure.” To this end, she uses her culinary knowledge to combine fine organic ingredients to create kid-friendly treats. These healthful snacks are packaged in resealable bags, making them convenient for home or travel.

When I read about Grace’s background as a chef and her food philosophy that “everything I make for my son is yummy enough for me to eat too,” I definitely thought she was onto something. We have so many “kid-friendly” foods on the market made to appeal to our little ones that we would never eat. It makes more sense to create meals and snacks that are family friendly, can be enjoyed by everyone, and promote healthy choices. I should be honest, however, and say that while this is the ideal, I definitely fall short of it at my house.

By chance, we opened the Kid’s Protein Bars first. I immediately thought that the mango, pecan, raisin flavor sounded intriguing and introduced it to my toddler (not realizing it was the kid’s version). My older son came along and, of course, wanted to try it, followed by his older sister. I hate to admit it, but they took a bite and immediately handed the bars back to me. Baby was a bit more interested, but soon left the treat behind. I was curious and took a bite. The initial flavor wasn’t bad, but the aftertaste left something to be desired.
Here’s the reality: these are not flavor combinations my family is used to. Sometimes adapting to new things like this take time. I wanted to do a comparison with a family that does not eat wheat, sugar, or dairy and who have probably never purchased a fruit snack. So, when my friend Kirsten visited with her two girls, I gave her a taste and she found these treats delicious, as did her daughters. They happily took them home and enjoyed the rest.
Toddler Protein Bars – Yum!
The good news? We tried the Toddler Protein Bars next and my toddler, Kai, loves them! The Fig, Quinoa, Beet flavor combination appeals more to his pallet and he happily eats them. I liked them better as well and found the after taste absent. Kirsten, who is more familiar with the ingredients in both foods, says it must be the date sugar that we are tasting in the kid’s bars.
While these flavor combinations could take awhile for my family to adjust to, I loved offering them a healthier, convenient option to other snack foods. My toddler quickly went through the bag and hopefully this can be the beginning of putting him on a more healthful track.
Thanks again to Grace at Sweet Pea Organics for so generously sending us this prize pack! We truly appreciated and loved trying the products.
