You can be successful on your own terms if you follow your instincts, listen to your gut, and create clear boundaries and expectations.
A Startling Revelation
At one point, I held my breath as Mindee Doney described a painfully low point in her personal and professional life. This revelation of depression, both emotional and financial, came unexpectedly. Mindee was the keynote speaker at the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration, after all, and a mom who created Boogie Wipes in her home kitchen. I didn’t expect the middle of her story to include losing her stake and her place in the business she helped create. I enjoyed her vibrant personality and fun anecdotes up to this point, but her refreshing honesty and willingness to share real struggles had me leaning in to listen for more.
Finding Success on Your Own Terms
Mindee didn’t come to the Disney conference to tell other moms the formula to becoming a millionaire or the one way to be successful. Instead, she came to talk about listening to our instincts and finding success on our own terms. She experienced great professional success, but at a cost to her family and her own happiness. Mindee knows what it means to pursue your professional interests and to raise a young family. She understands the struggle for balance moms feel and the guilt we experience at not getting everything “right.” Her message encouraged the audience to define their own success, both personally and professionally, and pursue it without compromising either.
What Goes Down Must Be Lifted
As she continued, talking about hitting an enormous low, Mindee told us, “What goes up, must come down. What goes down, must be lifted.” She took responsibility for her choices and looked for opportunities to begin again on her own terms. It wasn’t easy, but she is beginning again with a new company, Juice Box Ideas. What makes Mindee’s story truly fascinating is that she speaks only positively about Boogie Wipes and even gives out samples. This ability to let go of the hurt and pain she must have felt and remain amicable is truly admirable.

That is so exciting that you got to go to this. I wish there had been one in my area.

Picking yourself up every day and just keep moving forward is one of the bravest things each of us can do. Even if your biggest accomplishment was getting out of bed, you’re way further than those who chose to wallow.

I’m not looking to start a business and I only write on our private family blog (i.e., definitely not a social media mom), but I still appreciate this advice as it is good for all aspects of life. Thanks for sharing!

It is very hard to speak of those low times. It sounds like a powerful conference.
